At Least 26 Dead in Bus Accident in Central Indonesia

At least 26 dead and 17 injured Saturday in a bus accident in Central Indonesia.

Subang Police Chief, Adjunct Commissioner Muhammad Joni said a bus containing a group of cooperative employees reversed on an uphill road in Subang Regency, West Java, resulted in 26 people died, mostly female.

The accident happened on 17.00 PM Local time. The bus took about 50 people who had just returned from a trip in Bandung City.

"At that time, the bus was traveling from Bandung to Subang. when it reached the uphill road, the bus was uncontrolled and overturned," Joni said in an interview on Metro TV.

Television footage showed bodies lying on the ground, while officers tried to evacuate the victims from the bus window.

Joni said the accident also caused 17 people injured and have been evacuated to some hospitals in the city.

Most victims suffered broken bones and injuries from squashed.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but the temporary allegations the bus brake failure.

Transport accidents are common in Indonesia, where buses and trains are often old and badly maintained.
